Step beyond the traditional safari experience and discover the thrill of encountering one of Africa’s most iconic predators on foot with the Tshukudu Cheetah Walk.
Located near Hoedspruit within the beautiful Tshukudu Game Reserve, this unique wildlife experience offers guests the rare opportunity to walk alongside habituated cheetahs while learning about their behaviour, conservation, and the delicate balance of the African bush.
At Imagine Africa Luxury Tented Camp, we believe the most memorable safari moments are often the most immersive. The Tshukudu Cheetah Walk combines adventure, conservation, education, and connection — creating an unforgettable safari activity near Kruger National Park.
Established in 1980 on what was once a cattle ranch, Tshukudu Game Reserve has evolved into a thriving wilderness reserve rich in wildlife, birdlife, and authentic African bushveld scenery.
While several antelope species and giraffe already roamed the land, many animals were carefully reintroduced over time — including rhinoceros, which inspired the name “Tshukudu”, meaning rhino in Sotho.
Today, the reserve is teeming with wildlife, prolific birdlife, towering Acacia and Marula trees, and diverse ecosystems that create the perfect setting for immersive bush experiences and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
One of the most extraordinary parts of this experience is the opportunity to walk with Duma, a once-orphaned cheetah who was lovingly raised by the Tshukudu sisters before being successfully reintroduced into the wild.
After later being rejected by another coalition of male cheetahs, Duma began accompanying guides and guests on bush walks, seemingly viewing them as part of his own coalition.
Watching Duma move effortlessly through the bushveld — sometimes even hunting alongside the group — is a truly rare and unforgettable experience that very few people in the world will ever encounter.
Guests depart in the early morning for this guided bush walk, when temperatures are cooler and wildlife activity is at its peak.
Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, guests explore the reserve on foot while learning about the hidden details of the African wilderness — from animal behaviour and tracks to birdlife, ecology, and conservation.
The walk itself already offers the incredible opportunity to encounter wildlife such as:
But the chance to experience the bush alongside Duma the cheetah elevates this into something truly extraordinary.
Throughout the walk, guides share fascinating insights and hidden secrets of the bush, creating an experience that is educational, immersive, and deeply memorable.
Unlike viewing wildlife from a safari vehicle, walking through the bush creates a far deeper connection to the surrounding environment.
The Tshukudu Cheetah Walk is ideal for guests seeking a more personal, conservation-focused, and unforgettable safari activity during their stay in Hoedspruit.
Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, photographer, birder, or first-time safari traveller, this is an experience that will remain with you long after your safari ends.
