HOT AIR BALLOONING
“Balloonists can dawdle, lollygag, cast their fate to the wind and become part of the ebb and flow of nature. In that silent realm, far from the mischief and toil of society, all one hears is the urgent breathing of the wind and, now and then, an inspiring gasp of hot air.” — Diane Ackerman
Experience the magic of a lighter-than-air flight near the foot of the Drakensberg Escarpment. Every good weather morning at sunrise, balloons depart from the launch sites near Hoedspruit for the experience of a lifetime which turns out to be an hour long flights over the scenic Lowveld of the Blyde River. The terrain is a mixture of farmland and private nature reserves at the foot of the Drakensberg Escarpment. Game spotting is almost a guarantee.
Flights are conducted throughout the year, with mid-summer sunrise at 05h00 and mid-winter sunrise at 06:30. We meet 20 minutes before sunrise at the launch site. Youngsters are welcome but should be at least 1.2m (4 foot) tall, so that they can see over the rim of the basket. Regrettably, pregnant persons may not participate in a balloon flight.
How about flying over the largest open pit in Africa or to the 3rd largest canyon in the world, The Blyde River Canyon? To see wild Africa from the sky, low-level, is something not to be missed. This spectacular experience offers an exceptionally panoramic and unobstructed view of a big game and wilderness area as Hoedspruit are perfectly situated to offer some of the best flying in the world..
Microlights can fly lower and slower than regular fixed wing aircraft, providing better opportunities for viewing and photographing wildlife. This is further enhanced by the open nature of the microlight’s “cockpit” – not even helicopters can provide the degree of unobstructed view that a microlight offers. This is a fun, exciting, and affordable aerial perspective on Africa’s wildlife and wilderness. You have the option to sit and experience the flight and view the game or you can have hands on experience from the first flight should you so wish. The choice is yours.
